There is a common argument about the evils of racism, and it states…
Dogs don’t care what color their owner is.
At first blush, the rhetoric is convincing, but it certainly does not stand up to scrutiny.
Dogs—in fact, animals in general—do not have enough powers of discernment to correctly judge a person. Sure, they may be able to sense when an earthquake or storm is coming, but they are not so great at judging the character of the person who gives them food and shelter.
Dogs don’t care about their owners’ skin color, just as they don’t care whether their owner is a criminal, murderer, or rapist. Putting forward this argument as a means to illustrate the evils of racism is ridiculous.
